“Pimeniki” art, a unique part in the popular culture, through its long-lasting course and ancient origin, has attracted scientist’s interest, folklorists and ethnologists, both from Greece and abroad. One of the most genuine forms of greek “pimeniki” art is Sarakatsaniki, with wide variety of shapes and patterns, having its roots in ancient times.
Due to the nature of their provincial way of life, The Sarakatsani, Greek
nomads, worked on wood, offered by paternal land and wool. This was made with
excess skill and consistency to the ancient and Byzantine traditions. The impressive
pieces of Sarakatsan work craft, both of weaving and woodcarving, indicate
a pure artistic greek expression, rich in visions and symbolisms.
